CHAPTER 23
When we get home, Jimmy goes to the fridge immediately and takes out a champagne bottle. âTime to celebrate! Weâre moving out of this shithole soon, baby face. Arenât you happy?â
Iâm in the recliner, rocking myself to death, too nervous to ponder what Iâve just done. Iâve committed myself to buying a two-million-dollar house I donât want. What pains me the most is that it will remain in Jimmyâs possession after I die, the last thing he deserves after all these years. But I can outsmart Jimmy.
I know I can outsmart him.
âWhatâs the matter? The cat ate your tongue?â Jimmy stands at the door, holding a champagne glass, the bubbles inside still settling.
I give him a fake smile. âNo, itâs just a headache. Iâm going for a walk.â I get up with difficulty and head for the door. âSee you soon.â
Jimmy doesnât interrogate me this time, despite having been extra controlling about my whereabouts lately. He needs to know where I go, how long I will be away, when I will be home. But now Iâve offered him something that will contain him for a while, heâs given up a little of that control. Itâs like a dangerous dance of cat and mouse.
Itâs high noon and the sun is bright. Just a few blocks from the house, the beach is at a full capacity, people playing volleyball, women sunbathing, young people surfing, children chasing down seagulls.
I avoid children like a plague. I donât look at them or talk to them. The deep shame inside me knows better than to trigger the memories. Itâs an avoidance thing, I know. But it works.
I find a spot on the beach away from everyone and pull my phone out. In the browser, I google Private Investigator, and several results come up. I click on my first search and scroll down, looking for a potential PI to work with. The names have pictures next to them. I donât know what exactly Iâm looking for. I haven't hired a private investigator before, so I have limited experience. I scrutinize their pictures and assess them by their looks, hoping to choose the best one.
